Everything You Want to Know About Hojicha Powder

Find answers to common questions about hojicha powder, from its flavor and uses to preparation and wholesale availability.

1. What is hojicha powder made from?

Hojicha powder is made from Japanese green tea leaves, typically sencha or bancha. The leaves are roasted to develop their characteristic aroma and flavor, then finely ground into powder.

2. How is hojicha powder different from matcha?

Although both are Japanese green tea products, they are made differently.

Matcha is made from shade-grown tencha leaves, which are steamed and dried without rolling before being finely ground. Hojicha powder is made from roasted green tea leaves.

Matcha is known for its green color, umami, and vegetal notes, while hojicha powder has a brown color and a warm, nutty, roasted flavor.

3. Does hojicha powder contain caffeine?

Yes. Hojicha powder naturally contains caffeine, but hojicha is generally known for its lower caffeine content compared to matcha.

However, the actual caffeine level depends on the tea leaves used, the roasting process, and the amount of powder consumed.

4. How do Light Roast and Dark Roast powders differ in flavor?

The flavor of hojicha powder varies depending on the degree of roasting. Light Roast offers a gentler, nuttier flavor, while Dark Roast delivers a richer, more pronounced roasted character.

Light Roast and Dark Roast hojicha powder comparison

Light Roast – Smooth, Nutty & Delicate

Light Roast offers a gentle, toasty aroma with subtle nutty notes and a smooth, mellow flavor. Its lighter roasted character allows the delicate qualities of Japanese green tea to come through.

Dark Roast – Rich, Bold & Deeply Roasted

Dark Roast delivers a rich, deeply roasted aroma with pronounced nutty and caramel-like notes. Its bold, full-bodied flavor offers a more intense roasted tea experience.

Both varieties are excellent for hojicha lattes, whether you prefer a lighter, more delicate flavor or a deeper, more robust roasted character.

5. How can hojicha powder be used?

Hojicha powder is a versatile ingredient, particularly well suited for lattes, specialty beverages, and desserts.

Popular applications include hot and iced hojicha lattes, frappés, ice cream, cakes, chocolates, and other confectionery. Its rich, nutty, and roasted flavor pairs especially well with dairy milk and plant-based alternatives such as oat milk.

Unlike matcha, hojicha powder is generally better enjoyed as part of a blended beverage or recipe rather than whisked with hot water alone. For traditional tea drinking, brewed hojicha leaves are a better choice.

6. Does hojicha powder dissolve in water or milk?

Hojicha powder does not completely dissolve in water or milk. It may float on the surface and can be difficult to mix evenly.

For a smooth hojicha latte, we recommend first whisking the powder thoroughly with a small amount of hot water using a bamboo whisk (chasen), then gradually adding milk.

This helps prevent clumping and creates a smoother, more consistent texture.

7. Is organic hojicha powder available?

Yes. We offer selected loose leaf hojicha varieties certified under Japan's Organic JAS (Japanese Agricultural Standards) system.

Availability and import requirements may vary depending on the destination country or market.

8. Can all of your loose leaf hojicha varieties be exported?

Export availability depends on the import regulations of your country and the type of tea.

Please note that we currently supply only organic tea powders to the European market, and exports of loose leaf hojicha to Europe are suspended. We also do not export certain bulky varieties, such as bancha hojicha.
